I am once again honored to serve as executive sponsor for the annual Tampa Bay Charity Register published by Tampa Magazines. Because of this, I am compelled to emphasize the experiences we share, the connections we make and the bonds we strengthen as they relate to our community. For me, it’s cases like Casey Williams, my 19-year-old client with Down syndrome, who saved multiple lives through her personal donation of organs.
As a result of her case, Tampa Bay hospitals improved their policies for monitoring pediatric patients postoperatively. Countless patients have avoided injury or death because of our efforts to prosecute Casey’s wrongful death from medical malpractice. The privilege I have been blessed to enjoy is advocating for our clients, their families and the overall safety of the community.

Nicknamed Strawberry Shortcake, Casey is remembered for her spirit, sense of humor and, especially, her hugs. Her sisters, Brittany and Aubrey, recall her love of music, singing and dancing, as well as her ability to memorize movie scenes and songs, complete with full-on mannerisms, voice inflections and personality. “Born with Down syndrome and heart defects that required surgery early in her life, Casey faced challenges from the very beginning,” her mom, Jamie, remembers. “But after her surgeries, she grew healthy and strong and embraced life with an enthusiasm that was unmistakably Casey. One of the ways she did this was through competing at the Special Olympics.”
Special Olympics Florida promotes inclusion and independence by helping people with intellectual disabilities build confidence, develop their abilities, form meaningful friendships and become active, respected members of their communities. In honor of Casey and her legacy, Special Olympics Florida is my charity of choice this year.
