ABOUT ME
I was born and raised in Western New York, in the Buffalo area. I accepted the position as head basketball coach at USF this past March and quickly fell in love with this city. Basketball was a savior for me. I grew up in the foster care system, sometimes with as many as 14 kids under one roof, so shooting hoops in the driveway became my place of peace. I also enjoy mentoring young men and being there for them during some of the most trying times of their lives while helping them chase their dreams.
MY LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
For breakfast, the family and I are probably heading to brunch at Union New American on Westshore — amazing food and service.
For a great casual lunch, I’d most likely head to Doormet in South Tampa. Great salads and sandwiches in a central location.
I’m a huge coffee drinker — I drink Starbucks every morning. However, I’m open to switching and would be all in on recommendations.
For a day out with family, we’d probably start by grabbing my morning coffee and then hitting PopUp Bagels. From there, we’d get on the boat and head up the river to Armature Works for a great meal at Ulele — another unbelievable Tampa restaurant.
I’m absolutely in love with Rocca. The food is amazing, the ambience is great and the mozzarella cart is easily one of my favorite culinary experiences ever. That and Columbia are two restaurants that can compete with anywhere I’ve ever eaten.
For a special occasion, we like to go to Bern’s Steak House. It’s an unbelievable culinary experience every time!
I like to give visitors the Tampa experience by taking them to Bern’s Steak House or Columbia. I always include a drive down Bayshore Boulevard — it’s one of the most beautiful places in Tampa.
I wish more people knew about Trattoria Pasquale in South Tampa — it’s phenomenal Italian with amazing homemade pasta and other Northern Italian dishes. Can you tell I love food?
I think one of the hidden gems of Tampa Bay is The Brisket Shoppe on Armenia. I’ve lived in Texas, Arkansas and Alabama, and it’s the best barbecue I’ve ever had!
I think one of the coolest places to experience culture in Tampa is Ybor City — there’s so much history there on every single block.
