The first Greco, Domenico “Dick” Greco, arrived in Tampa during the late 1800s from the same town many other Sicilian migrants were moving from, Santo Stefano.
The Ybor City restaurant of the same name pays homage to this group of people.
Dominico bought a hardware store in Ybor City and transformed it into a successful family business. His family served all types of people and Ybor City was just as diverse then as it is now.
Dominico married Evelyn whose mother, Rosa, rolled cigars in Ybor City.
Their son, born in their Seminole Heights home, Dick Greco, became the youngest mayor in the City of Tampa’s history. His fourth term ended in 2003 and the next generation grew up on Davis Islands. Dick “Dickie” Greco, Jr. served as a Hillsborough County judge for 20 years. Now retired, his portrait hangs in the courthouse in Downtown Tampa.
His son, Garrett Greco, a third generation realtor, grew up in the South Tampa neighborhood of Palma Ceia and is starting a new family enterprise in a field that has exploded in our city: real estate.
