Home Design: Cool by Design

Sumerset appliances and high-density PVC cabinetry complete the beautiful outdoor kitchen inside this cedar cabana.

In a state with endless summers and humidity that’s a near-constant companion, many Floridians retreat indoors rather than spend long afternoons outside. But with the right design, they don’t have to. This South Tampa backyard getaway by Landscape Fusion proves an outdoor space can be both beautiful and built for the heat.

At the heart of the layout is a 26-by-18-foot cabana that mirrors the main home’s charm while offering settings for lounging, dining and entertaining. The partially enclosed, shaded retreat includes two retractable screens to block the sun and cool the area when the overhead fan isn’t enough. It also features a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with a full-size sink, smoker, built-in marine-grade cabinetry and three refrigerators—one dedicated to wine.

Set against shiplap walls, a brick veneer gas fireplace with LED lighting offers visual contrast to the microblasted white marble flooring.

The living area is anchored by a gray brick masonry fireplace that stands out against snowbound-colored shiplap walls. Three TVs provide entertainment, including one above the fireplace that doubles as framed artwork when not in use.

The organically shaped pool and circular spa strike a balance of fire and ice, with a linear flame-topped water wall and a white marble pool deck that helps keep the surface cool. A cantilever umbrella by the spa provides added protection from the sun. Artificial turf, pavers and garden beds complete the escape with a touch of earthy beauty.
