By moving cargo, sending ships into the sea and creating channels, your child can run the Port of Tampa – or at least a version that’s a little more their size.
The KidsPort exhibit at the Glazer Children’s Museum beckons young ones as soon as they pass the welcome desk. A traditional water table on steroids, it is a working model of the port that includes levers and movable bars that allow kids to determine the paths of small ships and cargo.
The Glazer Children’s Museum encourages children to engage in imaginative play and explore a variety of careers. Instead of just moving plastic toys around in the water, kids can actually envision being a dockworker, harbor pilot or engineer at West Central Florida’s largest economic engine.
“KidsPort is a replica of the Port of Tampa Bay, giving the museum the ability to harness the power of this unique asset to our region,” said Jennifer Stancil, the president and CEO of the Glazer Children’s Museum. “Telling stories of local relevance makes museums unique to their community – the port is unique to our Tampa Bay lore and daily activity, and it’s a lot of fun for kids to learn about.”
Upstairs, kids can try out a variety of different careers in the Safety Village’s tot-sized versions of grown-up workplaces. Scroll down for more.
