What I Loved
Known as one of the best ski destinations in the U.S., Jackson Hole needs no introduction as a paradise for powder hounds. While I’ve skied here on several occasions, my most recent visit was in late September—during that quiet season before the winter rush. The aspen trees were in full transformation with golden hues and the temperatures were perfect for hiking up the ski mountain by day and hot-tubbing by night.
There’s no better welcome to this Western town than grabbing one of the saddle-shaped seats at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in the heart of downtown Jackson. Order something frosty and let yourself get pulled onto the dance floor by local cowboys who mingle with tourists during free dance lessons on Monday nights.
It’s a thrill to see elk in the wild, and you never know where they’ll turn up in the wilderness all around you. On past winter trips–and for nearly guaranteed sightings–I’ve taken sleigh rides across the snowy landscape of the National Elk Refuge, where roughly 5,000 elk migrate each winter.
Staying at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole was dreamy all around—from dips in the outdoor hot tubs beneath the surrounding Tetons and stargazing at night to a river stone massage at the spa. In winter, the resort’s ski-in/ski-out access makes it a no-brainer for convenient, luxurious family ski vacations, with a dedicated ski concierge and full-service rental shop on-site.
Next time…
I’ll check into one of the brand-new ski-in/ski-out luxury private residences opening for the 2025-26 ski season at Hoback Club, complete with an après-ski raclette bar, Michelin-starred dining and a subterranean wellness studio with a European hydrotherapy circuit.
