To help fight hypertension, one of the most preventable causes of heart disease, the American Heart Association partnered with BayCare to pilot a comprehensive blood pressure management program called Check. Change. Control. “Eleven local companies agreed to participate and allow employees to come in and get blood pressure screenings,” says CEO Tommy Inzina, who also serves on the Heart Ball cabinet. “Roughly 27 percent of the 1,326 people tested were considered hypertensive, and about half of them have seen improvement so far.” In the clinical setting, Kimberly Guy and her fellow members of the AHA Metro Board have introduced the Target: BP program, a national initiative that prioritizes blood pressure control within health care practices and organizations. “Our goal is to get clinics and health systems involved, making sure patients are aware of their blood pressure,” she says.
