A well-designed closet is more than just a place to store clothes—it’s a personalized space that enhances organization, efficiency and even your daily routine. Whether you have a spacious walk-in or a compact reach-in, smart design choices can make all the difference.

Start with Inventory
“When designing a custom closet, we begin by taking a detailed inventory of a client’s belongings,” says Lizzie Kawell of Studio M. Understanding how much space is needed for shoes, clothing, and accessories, as well as how the client prefers to view their items—whether through easy-access open storage or a more streamlined, closed approach—helps create a layout that maximizes both storage and functionality.

Storage Solutions that Work
Carin Zwiebel of CZ Interior Designs emphasizes that a custom closet is “an investment in order, efficiency and a more organized, stress-free life.”
Beyond shelves and rods, thoughtful additions like soft-close drawers, necklace cabinets, adjustable shoe shelves and built-in hampers elevate both function and convenience, says Debra Ackerbloom of Debra Ackerbloom Interiors.

Ciera Thompson of Michelle Miller Design adds that details like integrated lighting, jewelry organizers and customized hanging sections help tailor a closet to a client’s specific needs. “Some of our favorite custom closets include lit clothing rods, channeled lighting in glass door cabinets, hidden safes, and upholstered seating. We’re always eager to design a space for a client’s vision whether that be showcasing a shoe collection or having a safe home for all their jewelry pieces to shine,” she says.

Think Zones & Aesthetics
Lisa Gilmore of Lisa Gilmore Design advises thinking in zones—allocating space for clothing, shoes and accessories separately. She also encourages adding personality through cabinetry colors, wallpaper and statement lighting. “A chandelier and beautiful hardware can make a closet an even more glam experience,” she says.

Design Beyond Storage
“A closet should be more than just storage—it should be a beautifully designed extension of your bedroom,” says Jen Kravchuk of Charleston Bay Interiors. Incorporating stylish rugs, chic lighting and thoughtful details can make the space feel as inviting as the rest of your home.
No matter the size, a well-planned closet transforms daily routines, adds value to your home and turns getting dressed into an enjoyable experience.
