Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method sparked a trend in organizing spaces, notably closets. With these expert tips and tricks, you can transform your closet into the one you’ve always dreamed of.
Begin by taking inventory of everything you have and divide into three categories: keep (because you wear it), save (for sentimental reasons) and donate. Clothing in good condition can be brought to organizations like H&M in exchange for discounts or Goodwill while those in poor condition can go to textile recycling programs.
“Anything that doesn’t fit, or you rarely wear, is ready for retirement,” says Alyssa Hannah, the Marketing Operations Specialist with California Closets Tampa Bay.
When returning items to your closet, group them by type and sort by category, length, occasion and color. Fold pants in half and higher to maximize space and stack folded sweaters to avoid stretching.
For accessories, hang belts and lightweight scarves, fold thick scarves and store smaller items in wicker or wire baskets. Shoes can sit on adjustable countertop shelves at eye level or above your clothes.
“Accessories, such as purses, ties and jewelry, should be placed on designated shelves or specialty racks so that each item can be accessed and put away neatly,” Hannah adds.
From sundresses to sandals, jackets to jeans, with a little bit of forethought, some rearranging and following these steps, your dream closet is within reach.
