From fixtures to furniture, Mastry worked with manufacturers to customize every piece. He split the living room into a TV space and a sitting room. Custom armchairs combine organic natural linen with ocean-blue die. (Photography by Gabriel Burgos)
A transitional-style condominium in One St. Petersburg provides a welcome retreat for Haven Home founder and principal designer Michael Mastry. For his principal dwelling, he chose One St. Petersburg, a luxury condo building in St. Pete’s desirable downtown waterfront district and the tallest building in the city and surrounding Pinellas County.
His space boasts an unmatched view of the urban waterfront including the pulsing pier, yacht basin and adjacent airport. To take it all in, Mastry crafted a classic transitional home with a coastal vibe.
Straddling the border between contemporary and traditional, the ambiance is comfortable and inviting. Clean, modern lines encourage an appreciation of Mastry’s exotic art collection, bespoke furniture and architecture with organic finishing material.
Mastry personalized the living room with a wall of stacked chisel marble. Glistening when lit, the wall brings texture and light to the space. Neutrals and subtle accents draw the eye to enormous patio doors and a stunning downtown view. Art is also prominent throughout the home. “Art procuring is not about passion for a particular artist or the monetary investment. It’s about how pieces make me feel and what a piece can do for a room,” Mastry reflects. “Art has the ability to bring culture into a room. It’s the spice.”This limited-production Article Chandelier by Thomas O’Brien hangs above the dining table. Commissioned artwork “The Party Within” is by a Texan artist who goes unnamed and doesn’t sell to the public.A hand-painted design adorns the walls of Mastry’s den. Painted in a careful sweeping motion, it creates a whimsical feel, providing a backdrop of refreshing movement to the room. All trees are created locally and specifically for the space occupied. The den, used as a workspace by Mastry, is simultaneously soothing and dynamic. A full bath adjacent to the den is revealed by a hidden door. Both bedrooms contain spectacular floor-to-ceiling views. The master bedroom is serene and simple, featuring a natural linen wall covering and custom lighting. The balcony flooring is made of real teak wood interlocked with turf grass, providing an ideal surface for Mastry’s evening yoga. The wall covering in the guest bedroom was created from authentic, stained wood veneer. The allure of the graining catching the light is show stopping.
