Keebler J. Straz is the President of the Straz Family Foundation, where she leads initiatives to support performing and visual arts, education and civic causes. She also serves as a trustee on numerous boards, including the Tampa Museum of Art, Opera Tampa, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and the University of Tampa, among others.
I was born and raised in Tampa. My late father, David A. Straz, Jr., was a philanthropist and businessman known for his commitment to improving the region through strategic investments and contributions to the arts and culture. What began as a struggling community has evolved into a vibrant arts district and a larger, well-known city.
My mother, Catherine Lowry Straz, has always advocated for education and the arts, with a deep passion for community engagement and service. Together, they dedicated themselves to making a lasting impact on Tampa Bay, investing themselves in causes that foster growth and create opportunities. Watching them give their time and resources instilled in me the importance of supporting others and advocating for causes that matter. It led me to focus on expanding access to education and supporting the arts—values woven into my life early on. Serving on alumni boards and arts organizations allows me to honor my family’s legacy of service while making a meaningful impact on the causes closest to my heart.
I loved attending musicals and operas with my parents. It sparked my love for the theater and the arts. After seeing “Mamma Mia” and repeatedly listening to the soundtrack, I was hooked and never looked back!
One of my fondest memories of Tampa is always attending the Gasparilla festivities. Both my grandfather and father were members of the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla (YMKG), which made the event even more special for us.
From a young age, I always knew I wanted to be an attorney and contribute to our family’s foundation. A fascination with crime-solving, fueled by shows like “Criminal Minds,” led me to briefly consider a career as a forensic anthropologist, where I could explore the mysteries hidden within human remains.
The last few years have taught me the importance of genuinely listening to those with more experience. Often, I am the youngest person in the room, and while I value the wisdom and perspectives of others, I’ve also realized that my age doesn’t diminish the value of my own insights.
In my spare time, I love getting out on the water. There’s nothing like spending a day on the boat! I also catch every Tampa Bay Lightning game and always cheer them on.
I recently had the opportunity to visit Australia. I explored the Great Barrier Reef, went snorkeling and was in awe of the vibrant marine life.
The biggest item on my bucket list is to take a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti during the Great Migration in Tanzania.
People might be surprised to learn that I used to be a synchronized swimmer. It was an amazing experience that taught me a lot about teamwork, discipline and the importance of staying in sync – not just physically, but mentally too.
I also love antiquing – there’s something special about hunting for unique, vintage treasures and uncovering pieces with history. It’s a mix of art and adventure, and I always enjoy discovering new finds that tell their own story.
A song I love is “Dancing Queen” by ABBA. It’s from one of my favorite musicals, “Mamma Mia!” And it’s impossible not to smile when it comes on. The energy and carefree vibe instantly lift my mood and remind me to embrace the fun moments in life.
My perfect day starts with a great cup of coffee and some quiet time with my dogs by my side. Then, I’d spend the day on the water, whether boating or just soaking in some sun. In the evening, I’d welcome friends and family over for good conversation and laughs.
