Dr. William Mack, an oculoplastic surgeon based in South Tampa with 29 years of experience, was recently a featured speaker at the 7th Annual Global Aesthetics Conference in Miami Beach, Florida. At this multidisciplinary event, which highlights four aesthetic specialties, Dr. Mack’s presentation, “An Eye-Opening Experience: Combining Ptosis Repair with Cosmetic Blepharoplasty,” focused on advancements in ptosis surgery.
The highlight of his talk was an internal ptosis repair technique that requires no sutures and can be performed simultaneously with cosmetic upper eyelid blepharoplasty. This internal approach results in less postoperative swelling, reducing recovery time. These advancements allow patients to achieve optimal outcomes with cosmetic upper eyelid surgery.
During his presentation, Dr. Mack emphasized, “When eye contact is made, we immediately begin forming our first impressions. Judging someone to be tired, sad, angry or pleasant is based on the appearance of the eyes as this area is the most important aesthetic region of the face. Evolving trends in oculoplastic surgery include an emphasis on achieving natural aesthetic outcomes while avoiding overdone, unnatural results. The ultimate goal is to create a natural, more youthful, refreshed appearance through various cosmetic techniques. This goal is achieved by focusing on maintaining volume in the eyelids and avoiding the hollowed outcomes in eyelid surgery that were often seen in patients who underwent surgery in prior decades.”
Cosmetic ptosis surgery addresses the weakness of the eyelid-lifting muscle. Drooping eyelids can accentuate tiredness and make a person appear older than their actual age. During an upper eyelid examination, the height of the eyelid is assessed in relation to the pupil. Many candidates for eyelid surgery feel their eyes look “heavy” or less expressive, affecting their self-esteem and confidence. By naturally reversing signs of aging, ptosis surgery raises the eyelids, restoring a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
In summary, cosmetic ptosis surgery produces natural-looking results for patients who want to appear more awake and refreshed. The internal approach to eyelid lifting has significantly reduced recovery time and minimized swelling and bruising, allowing patients to achieve optimal outcomes. Overall, the goal of any facial cosmetic procedure is for the patient to look in the mirror and see a more rested, refreshed version of themselves.
