TAMPA Magazine’s 2019 Attorney Profiles – Marc Matthews

Personal Injury Law/Trial Law

Holding the Powerful Accountable

Attorneys in all practice areas fight for their clients, but as Marc Matthews sees it, nothing compares to a trial attorney’s ability to give voice to the voiceless in their legal battle against a powerful corporation or insurance company.

“There is nothing more gratifying than listening to the jury render a verdict in favor of my client, knowing everything my client has gone through over the years to get to that point,” Matthews says.

After spending years working for some of the largest law firms in the world, Matthews, who is AV-Preeminent rated by Martindale-Hubbell, formed Matthews Injury Law in 2014. His team works collaboratively for their clients, regardless of the case’s complexity. Matthews’ tenacity helps his clients obtain the justice they deserve, like one individual who faced unyielding pain and suffering after a car accident that, on its face, did not seem catastrophic.

“We listened to him and attempted to truly understand his pain and his daily challenges,” Matthews says. “The jury returned a verdict in favor of our client that was more than 100 times the amount of the initial offer from the defendants.”

Though many cases eventually end in a settlement, Matthews’ team approaches each case as if it is going to trial, from the initial meeting until the case is resolved — no matter how long, exhausting or expensive the fight. Beyond compensation for the client, Matthews says punishment is important to hold companies accountable for the wrongs they commit against everyday citizens.

“We often see corporations cut corners without regard for the harm caused to our clients,” he adds. “We are here to ensure that doesn’t happen again.”

Outside of his practice, Matthews — who grew up in the Tampa Bay area — is a husband, a father of two children, and an active member of the community. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Jackson in Action 83 Foundation and is the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ryan Nece Foundation.
