For Brad Smith, a Ferrari 312 PB has been a fixation since his teens. He first saw the car on “Victory by Design” on Speedvision, and around the same time discovered Pierre Scerri’s astonishing scale model. Those two reference points stuck with him for decades.
A building contractor, Smith found himself in a model home with a large empty garage as the pandemic construction boom faded—and decided it was finally time to build one. With no specialty tools and no experience in this kind of work, a full-size replica was off the table (and he’s no fan of replicas anyway). So he split the difference between his two inspirations: an 80% scale car, hand-built entirely from photographs and online dimensions.
Where the original ran a 3-liter flat-12, Smith’s is powered by a Honda Goldwing 1500 flat-six. After eighteen months of hand-shaping the frame and body, the result weighs roughly 700 pounds and makes 100 horsepower—a very entertaining drive.
