For Dr. Malcolm Root, his 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL is far more than a vintage weekend cruiser—it’s a cherished link to his father.
A college professor in a small Ohio town, the elder Root never splurged on himself. He passed up the extravagant and the expensive his entire life, with one exception: this elegant roadster, his single, well-earned indulgence. When he passed away, he left the car to his children. Dr. Root, Vice President of Florida Urology Partners and a urologist since 1992, brought the Mercedes south to his Tampa home.
Then came the twist. Shortly after the car arrived, Dr. Root searched the glove box for its repair history and found the original bill of sale. The Mercedes had been purchased new 43 years earlier—at a Tampa dealership, by a colleague he personally knew. After decades and thousands of miles, the car was home at last.
