Bringing Mediterranean and European Flair to Outdoor Spaces

Design trends ebb and flow, and the latest is bringing Mediterranean and European influences to outdoor spaces, characterized by sun-bleached neutrals, Greek tiles and plenty of greenery.

“There is an effortlessness to Mediterranean design,” says interior designer Nicholas Trobiano of Trobiano Studios. “Organic materials like clay, stone and wood appear in virtually every space, as do sustainable elements like architectural salvage and antique furniture. At the same time, it’s full of lush green landscapes, large palms and seaside vistas.”

Robert Sicignano of Elite Pool Designs first noticed the interest in incorporating Greek tiles and Grecian-Roman pool shapes around five years ago, and it has been steadily growing in popularity. In addition to favoring greens and blues, his clients have also developed a fondness for columns, pergolas covered in vines and the use of fire and water bowls near pools.

While a pool is a blessing to have in the Sunshine State, another way to bring a touch of the Mediterranean to your outdoor space is by incorporating terracotta. Though Sicignano notes that using the material as tile can result in a slippery surface, Trobiano suggests achieving the color and feel through terracotta pots to create that sense of warmth.

“I love the look of ornamental red terracotta pots filled with orange and lemon trees — both of which grow very well in Florida,” Trobiano says. “I also enjoy using my collection of brown terracotta bowls and serveware for casual entertaining. There’s a rustic, earthen quality to fired clay that makes everything feel more intimate and lived-in.”

For an easy way to bring that ambiance to your outdoor space, Trobiano suggests incorporating terracotta pots or planters into your garden.

“Sago palms and olive trees are excellent sun-loving, drought-tolerant plants that do well in large planters for several years,” he adds. “You might also try collecting vintage ceramics or plaster sculptures to display on a mantel or windowsill.”
