Devanand Mangar, M.D. is always on the move. “There are not enough things for me to do in the amount of time I have in a day,” he says. Since he is so passionate with his work, it feels like he is always on vacation.
Dr. Mangar is the Chief of Anesthesiology, past Chief of Staff and is on the Board of Trustees of Tampa General Hospital. Dev Mangar founded the University Foundation for Education and Research and has published several hundred peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Outside of anesthesiology, Dev owns and manages Tampa Outpatient Surgical Facility, a 1,000-acre ranch and the Hotel Zamora on St. Pete Beach, is invested and involved with the real estate wellness company Delos, and is working on the creation of the world’s first “Staywell” hotel.
Dr. Mangar attempted an open-heart surgery residency but fell in love with the “cerebral” part of anesthesiology. He is focused on anesthesia for cases including transplantation of the liver, heart, lungs, kidneys and pancreas. Dr. Mangar says, “I treat every patient as if they were my family members, and I do love my family.”
Always looking out for the best for his patients, Dr. Mangar is a big proponent of techniques that reduce the utilization of narcotics to help combat the opioid epidemic. In 2016, Dr. Mangar was named the recipient of the James M. “Red” McEwen Memorial Award from the Tampa General Hospital Foundation in recognition of his outstanding service, incomparable dedication and exceptional contributions to the hospital. He says he sees an opportunity to bring the skills he’s honed in the hotel business to the medical world.
“I am a big fan of the Ritz-Carlton, with ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen,” Dr. Mangar says. “Why not bring that mantra into the hospitals as we care for patients? After all, ‘hospitality’ is ‘hospital’ with an -ity and ensures the best patient experience.”
