Under Dr. Panos Vasiloudes’ 23-year leadership, Academic Alliance in Dermatology has truly become academic, with a vision to integrate basic science, clinical research and a full range of medical and aesthetic dermatology services on a global scale. “We blend the new with the old,” Dr. Vasiloudes says. “We innovate, but we still respect the tradition.”
In the past year, Academic Alliance in Dermatology has grown to a total of 18 offices — including its first locations in Polk County — in the Tampa Bay area, with the addition of two new physicians, three new nurse practitioners and a new physician’s assistant. The practice has expanded its technological capabilities, providing cutting-edge medical dermatology services like phototherapy and Mohs surgeries at nine locations and recently opening the state-of-the-art laser center at the office on West Kennedy Boulevard.
“We’re excited because we’ve improved in literally every area,” Dr. Vasiloudes says.
Academic Alliance in Dermatology is heavily involved in research, particularly in the area of melanoma. For patients, that means faster, more accurate and higher quality diagnoses, as well as access to new medications for the treatment of conditions like psoriasis and eczema and new applications of existing medications. “We’ve been awarded new studies for biologic agents and are focusing on cutting-edge research, where the impact is going to be significant,” Dr. Vasiloudes says.
Dr. Vasiloudes believes the most significant impact will come from the practice’s long-range study of genetic patterns in melanoma, tracing how the disease is passed down through multiple generations of the same family. “Our data is going to change the landscape of how we care for melanoma,” he says. “The focus will be really knowing our family history.”
