What are some of the new developments in orthodontic care at your practice?
With the proliferation of digital orthodontics, we now have the ability to manage the intricacies of tooth movements precisely and can provide a better quality of treatment for all patients. Digital scans are more precise and accurate than traditional impressions, and patients do not have to suffer from gagging with the gooey alginate material. Patients are also often able to see a simulation of the proposed treatment outcome after having a digital scan taken at their consultation appointment.
What are your options for adult patients?
Depending on your goals, there is a wide range of esthetic options available to you. We can straighten just a few teeth that concern you, or all your teeth. Sometimes your dentist wants us to move your teeth in preparation for veneers, crowns or implants. We can align your teeth using clear braces or without braces at all, using Invisalign®. Many adult patients also appreciate our digital approach to orthodontics, as it saves on time and increases the accuracy of the entire treatment plan.
How can crooked or misplaced teeth impact a person’s overall health?
When the teeth are not properly aligned, this can create small areas of the mouth that brushing and flossing simply can’t clean. Over time, these areas can accumulate plaque that causes cavities or an oral infection to develop. Growing research has revealed that gum disease is actually a very common risk factor for many systemic health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and even dementia. When the teeth are put into their proper positions thanks to orthodontics, a person is able to clean their mouth much more thoroughly, helping them achieve and maintain optimum oral health.
Why should patients go to a board-certified orthodontist rather than use a direct-to-consumer teeth straightening product they can buy online?
Board-certified orthodontists are specialists who receive an additional two to four years of training after receiving their doctorate degree. They then obtain the elite board certification and recertify every 10 years to stay abreast of all the technological and diagnostic advances in orthodontics. Many of these mail-order companies don’t require an in-person orthodontic exam or supervision from an orthodontist throughout the treatment. Without any examination before or during this treatment, moving the teeth could result in gum loss, tooth loss, misaligned bite, or other irreparable damage to the teeth, bones and jaw.
