Sonya Bryson-Kirksey: Tampa Bay Lightning National Anthem Singer

About me

I grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. I joined the U.S. Air Force in 1987. I was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in 2011 and retired in 2015 as a technical sergeant.

My singing journey began in the crib. As a child I sang in my church choir and at school. My most meaningful performance was for President Barack Obama at MacDill in 2014. I’m in my 10th season singing the National Anthem for the Tampa Bay Lightning and it’s magic every single time. I’ve also sung for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rays and Rowdies, as well as the Orlando Magic.

My Local Knowledge

My favorite place to shop for Lightning gear is the Tampa Bay Sports Store in the Amalie Arena. They have things that other stores don’t have. From time to time, I’ll also grab a few things online from Fanatics.

I get my nails done at Pink and White Nails in Riverview. My nail tech, Lynndy, takes care of me.

My personal hair stylist of 10 years is Shala Howard at American Braids and Beauty on Armenia Avenue. She is just as excited as I am about putting the blue in my hair and makes sure that I am game ready.

For dinner, my husband, Jimmie, and I love the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City. I order the Shrimp Cannelloni de Langosta. Every single person waiting on us has been amazing.

To enjoy the outdoors, we often visit Hillsborough River State Park. We enjoy hiking those trails because it’s still so untouched and walking over the bridge is really fun.

My Tampa Bay hidden gem is Apollo Beach because it’s nestled in the community. We like to play in the warm shallows near the power plant when our grandkids and friends come to visit.
