Albert Alfonso is a Tampa icon, as locally authentic as he is worldly and genuine. “The Charge of the Yellow Rice Brigade (2020),” an oil-on-canvas piece, hangs in the Teddy Roosevelt Room at the Alfonso-designed Hotel Haya in Ybor City. It anchors the meticulously designed room while telling the story of when Roosevelt and his Rough Riders rode into Tampa en route to Havana to fight in the Spanish-American War. Upon arrival, they were welcomed into Ybor by Cuban-Americans with a meal of chicken and yellow rice, fueling them for their journey ahead.
