The Tampa Bay Spring Fishing Report: Part 2

What to know before hitting the waters of Tampa Bay for spring fishing

SPRING INTO ACTION

Our fantastic fishing season continues this month. As our feathered friends from the north migrate home, here in Tampa Bay, the water is rising to tropical temperatures. Our fishery is coming alive with an abundance of bait fish rushing up the center of the bay, creating a feeding frenzy for all anglers.

Whether you are new to fishing, a pro or, like most, just pretty familiar with a rod and reel, then you should be very excited about the spring fishing season. A great resource for expanding your knowledge base is the state of Florida’s saltwater regulations. Checking these out will help you plan your trip and also introduce you to a treasure trove of statistics and lots of information.

Let’s examine two different kinds of fishing trips. The first is sport fishing for catch and release. Catch and release sportfishing usually includes the Tampa Bay inshore slam, discussed in the previous issue, consisting of a snook, redfish and speckled trout all caught on the same trip. These fish are highly sought after and can only be caught and released. This month, they’ll be coming out of their lethargic resting spots from the winter, and they’ll be hungry!

Alternatively, you may be targeting fish that you can legally possess or harvest. If your desire is to put some “keeper” fish in your fish box for cleaning and a fresh dinner, I suggest that your fish box be iced down. The best way to preserve the fish you have caught is to fill your fish box with a slush made from salt water and ice. This makes them stay extremely fresh and also much easier to clean. The species to be on the lookout for include Spanish mackerel, snapper, flounder and cobia. But keep your eyes peeled for surprises; you never know what is going to come up when the fish fight is on.

Also, don’t forget your essentials: light tackle gear, a 20-to-30-pound leader, number one circle hooks, split shot weights, and spool your rods and reels with a 10-to-20-pound fishing line. This is truly a great time to fish. Bring the family, or just enjoy some me time. Fishing is a total stress reliever.

Tight lines!
