Think Big: The Rise of Large-Format Tile

Large-format tile is making a big impression in new construction and home renovations. These oversized tiles—available in sizes as large as 6 feet by 6 feet—offer a clean, contemporary look with fewer grout lines, a spacious appearance and a more seamless visual flow.

This Bayshore penthouse features 4-foot porcelain tiles with continuous marbling, carefully mapped for placement.

While tile has long been a staple in homes, smaller 12-by-12-inch tiles can make a space feel dated. Today, many homeowners are opting for a more contemporary approach, using large-format tile throughout entire homes rather than mixing flooring types from room to room.

Única Construction Inc. specializes in using large-format tiles in full-home flooring remodels and new builds. Led by President José Reyes and Project Manager Oscar Mercado, Única is one of the few builders that creates a physical placement map once the tiles arrive. Treating each piece like part of a puzzle—accounting for natural variations in veining, tone and pattern—helps ensure a unified flow and avoids a disjointed, patchwork effect.

This second-floor bedroom in Oldsmar features 4-foot Italian porcelain tile with a high-polish, cloud-like design, installed on cement backer board over wood joists.

Installing these tiles is no small task. Due to their size and weight, each one typically requires two to three installers and suction tools to position properly. Tight spaces and high-rises add to the logistical challenges. Depending on layout and number of cuts, crews usually install just 6 to 10 tiles per day.

The result is worth the effort—but achieving an ideal look using large-format tile takes planning, patience and an experienced team.
